Where to go from here.

Sagres is the south-western tip of mainland Europe, small enough to cross in ten minutes and wild enough to fill a week. A few favourites, with the distance one way from the shop.

  1. 6km

    Cabo de São Vicente

    The lighthouse at the end of the world. Almost flat but exposed on the plateau, so expect wind. Go early, or stay for sunset.

  2. 2km

    Fortaleza de Sagres

    The fortress on Ponta de Sagres, with sheer cliffs on three sides. An easy ride through town.

  3. 3.5km

    Praia do Beliche

    A cove under the cliffs on the road to the Cabo. Leave the bike at the top; it’s a long staircase down.

  4. 2km

    Martinhal & the Baleeira harbour

    The fishing harbour and a wide, sheltered beach. Flat and easy, good with kids.

  5. 14km

    Vila do Bispo & Cordoama

    Inland to Vila do Bispo, then the long drop to the west-coast beaches. What goes down comes back up; take an e-bike.

  6. 33km

    East to Lagos

    The Ecovia do Litoral, the Algarve stretch of EuroVelo 1, starts at the Cabo. Lagos is the first big town east.

№ 7 Who we are

Bruno Silva, owner and mechanic

From a need came an idea.

The idea came in 2016, out of a love of surfing and cycling and the lack of anywhere at this end of the Algarve to rent, buy or fix the gear. In 2017 Bruno Silva opened Sagres Bicycle and Company on the road into town, built with the help of a group of longtime friends who share the same love of the sea and the saddle.

Locals bring their bikes in for a service. Visitors come for a board and leave with a beach recommendation. Riders who break down on the coast road get a phone call answered and a mechanic on the way.

Where can I rent a bike in Sagres?

Here, on the Estrada Nacional 268, the main road into Sagres from Vila do Bispo. We rent city and trekking bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes by the day or the week, Monday to Saturday from 09:30 to 17:30.

Can you fix my bike if I break down on the road?

Yes. Our mobile mechanic covers the south-west Algarve from Sagres to Lagos and up the west coast to Aljezur. Call +351 918 471 545 and tell us where you are.

Do you rent surfboards and wetsuits?

Yes: soft-tops and shortboards from 5′10″ to 8′0″, wetsuits, board-and-wetsuit packages, and soft roof racks so you can carry boards on a hire car.

Which beach is best for beginner surfers?

It depends on the swell and the wind on the day. Sagres has beaches facing west and south, so there is usually a gentler option, often Mareta or Martinhal. Ask when you pick up your board.

Do you rent e-bikes?

Yes, alongside regular bikes. In July and August call ahead to make sure one is free.

How far is Cabo de São Vicente by bike?

About 6 km by road and almost flat: 20 to 30 minutes of easy riding. The plateau is exposed, so expect wind.

Do you sell bikes, boards and parts?

Yes. Bikes and parts from Fuji, Breezer, SE Bikes, Shimano, SRAM, RockShox, Campagnolo, Michelin, Vittoria and more; surf gear from brands such as Ocean & Earth, NSP and Madness; skateboards and parts from Santa Cruz, Arbor, Element, Independent, Paris, FLIP and Grizzly.

Do you teach skateboarding?

Yes, we run skate classes for beginners. Ask in the shop or call to arrange one.
